Keep your skin healthy from the inside out

Last week we started discussing skin structure and functions. This week we will be looking at that in a bit more detail and depth. The important part is to learn about the key concept of keeping your skin healthy from the inside out!!

The global Cosmetic Skin Care market size is projected to reach USD 134570 million by 2026, from USD 128380 million in 2020, at a CAGR of 4.5% during 2021-2026.

Maintaining beautiful skin.

This is clearly testament on the importance of maintaining beautiful skin. Topical Cosmetic products have been around for decades, and of course it is important to treat and protect the skin from the outside. BUT…

  • What did people do before the days of Topical Cosmetics?
  • What about the fact that our diets are vastly different from the nutrient rich produce of the past?
  • How about the environmental impacts which are increasingly putting strain on our skins?

Even a Plastic Surgeon, Elizabeth Kinsley, agrees (despite making money from plastic surgery) and states the following:

“Most of the over the counter products will actually improve your skin for a couple of weeks, but the results aren’t very long lasting. What you need is a regimen that will get your skin healthy from the inside out.”

Elizabeth Kinsley

This is what is referred to these days as Cosmeceuticals. It offers true skin improvement and longer lasting True Beauty from the Inside.

The ‘’ideal skin treatment’’ combines topical care and oral supplementation. Examples are listed below. We will be looking at these in more detail in the coming weeks.

Beauty from the outside

Let’s take a brief look at beauty from the outside, with the use of Cosmetic products.
Cosmetic Ingredients are derived in several different ways. Either biotechnology, synthetically, naturally. They are then formulated into products to achieve one of the following.

  • clean,
  • perfume,
  • change appearance,
  • correct (body odour, protect, or maintain).

When altering the structure of the skin, a product could be considered a medicine, and would require registration.

The basics of skin care, I am sure you know all about, and each category could deliver an active, or numerous actives to the skin. We could classify Cleansers, Toners, Moisturizers, serums, targeted and treatment products into categories. These would normally deliver the anti-ageing actives, such as vitamins, EFA’s(Essential Fatty Acids), Sun protection, and often Peptides as anti-ageing ingredients. As we heard earlier the Wrinkle is a very serious disease!

If we look at the Vital Skin Functions, they are as follows:

  • Hydration
  • Oxygenation
  • Protection,
  • Revitalisation.
  • Nutrition

Some of the symptoms of skin ageing are:

  • Depolymerisation of skin’s natural biopolymers
  • Slowing of cell proliferation
  • Decrease / degeneration of levels of collagen & synthesis
  • Epidermal thinning
  • Increase in TEWL
  • Changes in skin rheology (elasticity)
  • Pigmentation disorders (hyper and hypo-pigmentation)
  • Reduction of oxygen supply to the skin
  • Increase in production of ROS’s

In the coming weeks, we will learn how some of these Vital Skin Functions can be reached from treating the skin Topically and from the Inside. What are the recommended lifestyle habits, Nutrition and functional ingredients such as Collagen and Nucleotides as well as anti-oxidants.

Nucleotides, the building blocks of our DNA together with Collagen makes Nucleobeauty’s products the natural choice to keep your skin healthy from the inside!
